In November 2005 several San Francisco Bay Area women, outraged over the Iraq war, invited our community to demonstrate at the U.S. Army headquarters in Oakland and to attempt to enlist in place of our grandchildren. Three hundred fifty women and men, old and young, joined us. Our message was, “Take us instead. Do not sacrifice the lives of our grandchildren in a senseless war.”
Since then Grandmothers Against the War, with a steering committee of fifteen, has grown to include approximately 300 Bay Area members. We initiate and support non-violent actions to inspire a greater, more articulate anti-war movement (see Actions).
We are not convinced that the United States’ military mission in Iraq is coming to an end. We fear that escalating the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan is as disastrous as has been the U.S. military presence in Iraq. We are concerned with any saber-rattling towards Iran.
We urge you to join us in protesting these misguided military policies. The United States needs the wise voices of grandparents who passionately wish to leave our grandchildren a better, safer world.
