ABOUT US

Grandmothers Against the War was formed to implement non-violent actions to end the Iraq war and to recruit new members among all like-minded individuals regardless of gender, age or biology because  “’grandmother’ is a concept of love, all embracing.”

Grandmothers Against the War seeks to attract public attention to the on-going tragedy in Iraq and to educate people as to why the war and occupation should end and how they can act to end it.

In November 2005, several San Francisco Bay Area women, inspired by the Manhattan grandmothers who had been arrested while attempting to enlist in the U.S. military, signed a letter inviting all who received it to join a group of  grandmothers” dedicated to working to end the war in Iraq. The invitation was sent to friends and acquaintances, regardless of gender, age, parental or grandparental status, who were encouraged to circulate it widely. A month later, 23 women representing half a century of civil rights, anti-nuclear, feminist, health, and anti-war organizing met alongside women with little prior experience in activism.
